Life is short, and it is precious.
So is love.
I know there are times we all take life and love for granted. I think most of us realize that it's the height of foolishness not to cherish our loved ones, but knowing something and living it are often two different things. It's easy to get lost in the day to day grind of earning a living, building some kind of future, and forget that tomorrow may never arrive.
Not long before I met her, Serafina suffered the kind of loss that either destroys a person, or makes them very aware of the precious nature of life and love. I get a little teary eyed even thinking about it myself, knowing the depths of her loss, and feeling vicariously how it changed her life.
You see, Serafina lost her eldest son to a drunk and reckless driver, his life taken while walking peacefully beside the road. She experienced the knock at the door in the middle of the night, law enforcement officer standing here miserably, knowing the hardest words he'll ever have to say to a stranger are; "I regret to inform you," and, "You'll need to come identify the body."
My dear and departed Grandmother also said that every time the Lord closes a door, he opens a window. That's the solace I look for in rough moments.
And from that perspective, I'd like to think I was Serafina's window.
My simple wish for 2012, my personal resolution, is to remember to keep opening windows. Life's too precious to ever let a closed door stand . . .
